A-Team (OFS)

Explanation
The A-Team, also known as the 'Phakathis' was a vigilante group set up and headed by a well-known local councillor in the Thabong area of Welkom to counter the activities of the UDF primarily, and in a smaller measure, the ANC. The A-Team carried out a reign of terror in several areas of the province, particularly in Thabong and Parys, under the guise of 'maintaining order'. In at least one case, the A-Team is alleged to have been supported by police and municipal structures.

MR MATHEBULA: He was present in that interrogation team, but I don't as to whether he took part.
"I was never in the same team at work with the applicant as he alleges during 1982 and 1988, I never worked with the applicant at the security branch and he was never a member of the security branch of Compol, Pretoria in 1987 during my employment there".
DR RAMASHALA: Exactly when was this team, which was supposed to carry out this operation, exactly when were they briefed?
ADV BEMBRIDGE: So, if I am understanding you correctly then, you were the person responsiblefor making sure that the team got to the attack and away from the attack safely, but you had no idea of where you were going or how to get away from there thereafter?
COL LOOTS: No, I testified Bokaba joined when Dunira resigned and Sengwane and Bokaba then formed a team.
MR LAMEY: Thank you Mr Chairman, yes I confirm what Mr Brink has said. Mr Chairman I beg leave to hand up to the Committee, these documents have been distributed to the legal representatives of the other parties. It's a bundle of photos which I have obtained from the investigating team of the ...
MR BOOYENS: On page or paragraph 28 you deal with the situation on the ground and, perhaps, just for sake of completeness, there is a little bit more detail here. That morning, very, very early, before it was light, this police task team moved in?
MR CORNELIUS: Did you believe that evening when you waited with your team at the scene of the ambush, that the robbers would indeed be heavily armed?
I don't remember who said it, but somebody mentioned that a person was from the Sithole family and he also said that he also played for a team owned by Bongeni Mzizi.
Mr Olifant, in the bundle before you this Panel there is on page 146 to 152, an initial application dated the 11th of December 1996, signed before a Commissioner of Oaths, Andrew Liesk. Can I just lead you on this. Is this the first application that you submitted to the TRC with the assistance ...
MS MARCUS: I don't recall the specifics, but probably myself and others who had been part of preparing them. We would have a team who would be part of collecting the banners and distributing them at the march.
CHAIRPERSON: But that is the reason for my questions. You were there, you handled the beers, you were a member of the team which went on this operation, why can't we determine what these beers would have been used for?
"Nature and particulars: I was a member of a team consisting of Defence Force and Security Police members who apprehended a group of 10 ANC MK activists while they were on their way to Botswana in a kombi for further training."
CROSS-EXAMINATION BY MR HUGO: Yes, thank you Mr Chairman. Colonel Willy, who was the Head of this Investigation Team that was tasked to bring the culprits to book and to take them to court?
MR WILLS: Yes, because Gen Steyn has conceded during his cross-examination that the members of de Beer's unit, of de Beer's investigation team who were investigating on a national level the Operation Vula, were looking for these people and so you were part of the plan to tell these people that you ...
MR HATTINGH: Was it members of the team who were involved with the operation that went down to Durban, to discuss the matter with the Durban Security Police?
"De Kock and his team joined us in the planning of the operation. I cannot recall de Kock's team's names, but there were a few askaris."
MR MATTHEWS: You would have to ask my legal team about that. I cannot answer that question. I have been in prison, I do not have free access to him and I cannot see him when I want to.
Thank you. The interrogation team consisted of several members of the special branch. Is that right? --- Yes, that's right. They used to work in rotation.
MR WALUS: Mr Chairman it's half the truth because the police discovered this list but I can't say I gave it to them, I have no other option, they discovered it and took it. They were investigating team about this assassination. I couldn't give anything, I was not in the position to give or not, I ...
