A-Team (OFS)

Explanation
The A-Team, also known as the 'Phakathis' was a vigilante group set up and headed by a well-known local councillor in the Thabong area of Welkom to counter the activities of the UDF primarily, and in a smaller measure, the ANC. The A-Team carried out a reign of terror in several areas of the province, particularly in Thabong and Parys, under the guise of 'maintaining order'. In at least one case, the A-Team is alleged to have been supported by police and municipal structures.

MR VISSER: You have paragraphs 25 to 28 of Exhibit F before you and you have studied this and this is also a reflection of the information that you gave to us as your legal team. Do you confirm the content of these paragraphs and your insight and political motive with regard to your participation ...
MR DU TOIT: Chairperson, I definitely did not know who the specific individual was, if they had mentioned a particular name to me at that point, it wouldn't really have meant much to me, other than the motivation and the fact that a decision had already been taken by a higher authority and by the ...
In the morning I was taken again by Van Loggerenberg’s team and himself and then this person asked where are you taking this person to - they responded by saying they would take me to the doctor. I was taken to dr Mofsin’s surgery and then he examined me. I was bleeding and especially on the ...
Because it appears as though there was someone who also saw what happened and that he is prepared to tell us about it, but he did not want us to publish his name. At the time our investigative team spoke to him, he did not want us to publicize his name, but we will investigate the matter a bit ...
MR WILLS: And he got involved in some brawl with certain people and then he came to pick his team up to assist him in that brawl?
MR VISSER: Mr Zeelie, it is not the duty of someone like Mr Van der Merwe to see to it that cases appear in court, that is the duty of the investigation team who investigates the case, isn't it?
I couldn’t afford to go to school because of the assaults, they were accusing me of something I didn’t do, some things like public violence at the age of 15. While my parents were so sickly the policemen use to come at home, but they couldn’t find me because I was a soccer player, I use to go out ...
MR MANTHATA: In your injury, was he part of the team which used to defend you?
MR VIKTOR: Chairperson, any one of us who was involved in this team did some reconnaissance and that is how we knew how to get to the particular houses.
MR SIBANYONI: If you can still recall, was the team consisting of only white members, or were there both white and black members of the Special Forces?
ADV DE JAGER: Not by your team?
The second applicant Mr Mphoreng testified that at the time of the incident he was staying at one of the AZAPO hide out camps in Orlando East. He says that Jeff came to him early in the morning at about six (am) and told him that his house has been burnt. Other AZAPO members came and they ...
This is the situation that the fifth applicant found himself to be in at the time. He was a fairly newly appointed member of the Security Branch, he was a constable, he did not form part of the inner core of the investigation team. Mr Netshivale was not involved in any decision making, he was ...
MR NAIDOO: Were you the most junior member of the team that went to Mr Kunene's house on the fateful day?
MR CORNELIUS: It is common cause that you and the whole team went to a specific bridge outside Nelspruit, this is near the Khanyamazaan Road?
This information was then passed to Colonel Joe Verster and he went with the team to Botswana where the house was identified.  The Applicant stated that he knew that the information which he had disclosed to Mr Verster would be used for the purposes of an operation that was aimed at ...
For example, at Enoni, there was a dog called Stoffel, which often bit detainees. Electric shocks and tubing were the order of the day. Jan Munnik, the former police reporting officer for Gauteng and his team found electric shock equipment at the back of the casper, as well as pieces of an inner ...
Reconciliation Commission, the investigating team of the Attorney-
MR SHAIK: That is the one yes. That was purely an administrative omission, either on my side or my legal team's side. It would be foolish of me or ridiculous of me to have tried avoiding that deliberately as out of 31 acts I omit one. I therefore ask you to take that into consideration in terms ...
Good before I ask you to tell us a little bit about yourself and then also to tell us about your daughter, I would like to just read some of the context statement that has been prepared by your research team so that we understand what the context was and - at the time of your daughter's shooting. ...
