right-wing attacks

Explanation
Prior to February 1990, violations committed by members of right-wing organisations took the form of isolated attacks with a strong racist character. During the early 1990s, members of right-wing organisations, perceiving themselves to be placed under siege by the process of constitutional negotiations for a democratic dispensation, carried out a large number of attacks aimed at securing the political interests of conservative Afrikaners. Isolated racist attacks on individuals were replaced by mass demonstrations and orchestrated bombing and sabotage campaigns. Between April 1993 and May 1994, right-wing groups engaged in a range of activities to disrupt the negotiations process then underway, and later to destabilise the electoral process. Many of these acts were directed against persons perceived to be supporters and leaders of the ANC, the SACP, the UDF, the PAC and the National Party, and resulted in gross violations of human rights. Violations of a purely racial character were also carried out against black people. During the pre-election period, the AWB and other right-wing organisations engaged in a bombing campaign with the aim of derailing the electoral process. The objective of these activities was to move towards 'overthrowing' the National Party government and to establish a Boererepubliek (Boer republic) and volkstaat. Public areas such as taxi ranks, bus stops and railway stations were targeted, as were private residential and business premises of those associated with the ANC or the unfolding democratic order. State property was also targeted, especially following the announcement that the Group Areas Act was to be repealed and schools opened to all. A number of formerly 'white' schools were bombed. The campaign involved many acts of sabotage, some of which led to the loss of life.

I do not possess the information that you require with regard to casualties sustained in such attacks or the involvement of the SAP in cross-border raids and suggest that you approach the relevant authorities in this regard.

MR LUBBE: Maybe you should ...(indistinct) into the detail just indicate to the Committee what led the Black Cats to proceed from Ermelo to Davel. What was the reason behind this, why did you move from point A to point B to pursue your attacks in that area?
MR JANTJIE: The information that we got from our informers was that there was a member of the ANC who was called Betty Boom and Betty Boom was one of the MK people who was supposed to come and launch attacks before Xmas in 1987, in South Africa.
MR SIBEKO: Your election to become a Commander of the Self Defence Unit, was necessitated by the attacks that were made on Polla Park by the IFP members or people from Kalanyoni, is that correct?
CHAIRPERSON: Just very briefly. Mr Phikwane, these attacks upon the members of the South African Defence Force, the people that you attacked, were they in motorised patrols or vehicles or were they on foot patrols?
MR NTSEBEZA: Now you know that there were two forms of attack. The first attack was on the satellite camps. Now what role, if any, did you play in those attacks? Or let me put the question differently. Were the police aware from reports that an attack was imminent on those camps?
... you back to just before your husband was murdered. You spoke of two different people - they may be the same person - who came to warn you of these attacks, who came to say, "You must get rid of these young boys, otherwise you will be attacked". Do you know who those people are? Could you ...
Mr Mokgonyana said that during this meeting he overheard a discussion of attacks on policemen and he himself was not aware of any names or a specific attack. This contradicts the order from Toka to execute an attack on Kulele's home and Mr Toka authorised this attack.
MR ROSSOUW: Did he also mention to you that Mr Mabotha was involved with attacks on policemen?
The Applicants applied for amnesty for attacks by explosives on the Mzimhlope Hostel and the Dube hostel, alternatively the Jabulani hostel in Soweto.
CHAIRPERSON: Yes, but most of the attacks the objective was to kill people, but that also necessitated some sort of planning. What Ms van der Westhuizen wants to know is, did you people when you set off, when you got those firearms, did you have any plan in mind how you would go about killing ...

MR NGUBANE: The question that I had asked you, when you say that the police assisted Inkatha, were there any instances when the police would physically accompany Inkatha in the attacks that were directed at you?
MR ROSSOUW: Did he also mention to you that Mr Mabotha was involved with attacks on policemen?
MR RILEY: Did you not launch any further attacks after that?
MS REDDY: Did the people in the same area where you were robbed or attempted to be robbed, experience like problems, the same kind of problems like the robbery and attacks?
MR HATTINGH: And then you certainly must have known that they were involved in attacks which were described at that stage as acts of terrorism?
