Special Report Transcript Episode 32, Section 1, Time 00:21

Hello. A warm welcome from the Special Report team to our first programme for 1997. We’re on a new channel, SABC 1; a new timeslot, 8 o’clock; a slightly shorter programme and a bit of a new look. In tonight’s programme we’re going to look at which perpetrators of gross human rights violations received amnesty from the Truth Commission and whose applications were turned down and why. We’ll give some background to the unpleasant infighting in the Truth Commission and we introduce you to some of the victims of former Vlakplaas policemen Dirk Coetzee, Almond Nofemela and Joe Mamasela. But we start with a special story about forgiveness. The Azanian People’s Army was much feared by white South Africans because of their often ruthless attacks on civilians. For the first time this week the APLA high command formerly accepted responsibility for these attacks in an interview with the Special Report.
