00:15On the 15th of April last year the Truth and Reconciliation Commission held its very first hearing, it was a session of the Human Rights Violations Committee. This Committee had its last hearing this past week in the Eastern Free State. In the 14 months of Human Rights Violations hearings some 2000 people gave testimony, statements were taken from nearly 10 000 people. The evidence dealt with 4300 politically motivated killings and about 3000 cases of torture. The Truth Commission’s Amnesty Committee will continue to hold public hearings; some 8000 people have applied for amnesty among them generals and former cabinet ministers. This vast scope of activities makes our Truth Commission the most successful Commission of its kind ever held in the world. Public hearings on issues such as military conscription for young white men, the activities of the State Security Council and the role of the armed wing of the Inkatha Freedom Party will still be held.
