I was born in District Six. I was born in a little maternity hospital which is near Constitution Street, right in the centre of District Six. My father and my grandparents and so on all grew up in District Six. In fact my grandmother was one of the first people to be removed from District Six and went to live in Bonteheuwel. And then of course my parents moved to Athlone and that’s where I spent about nine years of my life, on the Cape Flats. And then when I started my training as a nurse I moved back to town, back to District Six where I did my midwifery at the same hospital where I was born. So in a sense I came full circle.
