Like so many soldiers and policemen who served the former government Paul van Vuuren and Wouter Mentz were the foot soldiers of apartheid. Their defence and justification, like all perpetrators, is that they simply obeyed orders. They were in the townships and they had to counter the rising tide of black resistance. They were just soldiers, used and abused by the politicians to keep the white man in power and uphold apartheid.
