Why did you kill Mxenge so brutally? // The intention was not to kill him brutally. It was to make the whole thing appear … it was to simulate robbery. But unfortunately in the scene of crime certain things develop that you don’t expect. Mxenge’s physical strength was undermined but when he ...
... is incredibly expressive of those two things: the frown on her brow, the hair in her hand, the anger, the pain that she’s carrying. // I went to Coetzee’s house in Pretoria and immediately I was struck by the phenomenal … that he’s actually incarcerated himself. It doesn’t matter what ...
As we still discussing of how next do we break the door down now, two women entered the kitchen with a lit candle and opened the back door. Joe grabbed one of the women and closed her mouth and shot at her at point blank. I heard someone drop to the cement like a bag of bones and the other woman ...
Boipatong, Vlakplaas job. I can assure you that Brig van Heerden and Snor Vermeulen, two of the Vlakplaas guys involved, blackened with these things that they use in plays and balaclavas, orchestrated … Boipatong, Vlakplaas job.
You never authorized anyone, and if any person under your command purported to authorize someone to commit an unlawful act, that person would have been acting unlawfully. Is that correct? // That person must be asked. // That person would be acting unlawfully. // That person must be asked… // ...
He was officially released at Bloemfontein where his car and belongings were handed to him and then a big scene in front of the uniform branch personal I suppose and when he then left on the road, he was abducted again by Nick van Rensburg and his men.
Back to the amnesty process now. Four Eastern Cape Security Policemen this week told the amnesty committee that Port Elizabeth activist Sizwe Kondile had to be eliminated because he was a trained ANC terrorist who knew too much about their intelligence network. The men all claim that they were ...
There’s one thing that I will have to live with till the day I day, it’s the corpses that I will have to drag with me to my grave, of the people whom I’ve killed. Remorse, I can assure you a lot, a hell of a lot.
What I think we find difficult to understand is how this could take place, how people could die, could be tortured, could be abducted, could be buried and many of them; and people like yourself and others just didn’t know, weren’t aware of that these people were acting unlawfully or illegally ...
not clear how Bheki’s name got involved as a sender in the parcel. Another thing that’s not clear in my mind, when they sent this parcel to Dirk Coetzee, as it was Eugene who claims he wanted to kill Dirk Coetzee. He was an expert in making bombs. When we read about letter bombs, how could he ...
Coetzee also contradicts the policemen on other crucial aspects such as who was the man who pulled the trigger. Van Rensburg, Du Plessis, Erasmus and Roth all insist that it was a Sgt Roy Otto of Vlakplaas. Dirk Coetzee denies this and Sgt Otto has since committed suicide. The former Vlakplaas boss ...
And Mr Coetzee then made the suggestion that if we did not the body to be found then he suggested that we burnt out the body. They had wood, a great deal of wood was available and that we should rather burn the body and they would ensure that the remains would be thrown into the Komati River. And ...
State President F. W. de Klerk appointed the Harms Commission of inquiry. Mr Justice Louis Harms said during the hearings that Coetzee was talking crap. The police said Coetzee was mad, Nofemela was trying to save his own skin and Tshikalanga was nothing more than a gardener at Vlakplaas. The Harms ...
... and Sgt Johannes Raath, who have all since retried are seeking amnesty for their part in Sizwe Kondile’s death. Former Vlakplaas commander Dirk Coetzee also wants amnesty for the same murder, but he has a separate amnesty application and a very different version of when, how and why the ...
Coetzee, Nofemela and Tshikalanga were convicted of the murder of Griffiths Mxenge in the Durban High Court last month. This week they were granted amnesty. The amnesty finding means they will no longer be liable for prosecution in respect of Mxenge’s murder. The Committee says that while there ...
... De Klerk was not entirely truthful when asked why his government did not close down the Vlakplaas death squad when its former commander Dirk Coetzee spilled the beans in November ’89. Coetzee was backed up by two Vlakplaas colleagues Almond Nofemela and David Tshikalanga. But De ...
... continued to ignore us and this appeared very strange to me. After we had passed them we were a bit of a distance past them I asked Warrant Officer Coetzee to turn around and drive back to the five men. While we were moving in the direction of these five men I asked Coetzee to stop in front of ...
Coetzee said a death squad, consisting of four black Vlakplaas policemen, did the actual killing. One of them, Almond Nofemela, admitted his involvement at the end of 1989. Nofemela was at the time on death row for another murder. David Tshikalanga confessed shortly afterwards. Coetzee and the ...
... trips. But behind this mask of charm and kindness lies a life of incredible violence and brutality. After blowing up Bheki Mlangeni instead of Dirk Coetzee in 1981, he said it didn’t matter that it was Bheki and not Coetzee. Bheki Mlangeni was anyway a member of the ANC. De Kock was very ...
Coetzee says that the lethal knock out potion was mixed by General Luther Neethling. In the 1980s an appeal court was unable to refute or to confirm the truth of this. In a letter addressed to the Amnesty Committee this week, Neethling emphatically denied that he was involved in any way with ...
