Was repeatedly detained and tortured between 1982 and 1986 at Mdantsane and Fort Jackson police stations in Ciskei. On one occasion, named members of the SAP bound his hands and feet and used a tyre tube to suffocate him. Mawonga played an active role in the resistance against the Ciskei government.
