Chris Hani, son of a Transkei migrant worker, Fort Hare University graduate at 19, a man who spoke with passion about both Shakespeare and socialism, a man whose coming of age at 21 involved skipping the country to join the exiled ANC. I visited the Hani family two weeks later and met 12 year old Lindiwe. // Your mom said that you knew my name. // Ja, but I didn’t hear what happened. // Oh, about my dad? // He was shot in 1978 when I was thirteen and he was killed in our house. A bit like your dad. Were you here? // No. // ...
A week into my journey, Chris Hani, a senior ANC official was assassinated. He was shot down in his drive way in front of his 14 year old daughter, Nomakwesi. It was a terrifying indication that assassination continues to be used as a political weapon in South Africa. // ‘It was consistent with ...
Prophetic words by South African Communist Party leader, Chris Hani just a year before Polish immigrant Janusz Walus shot and killed him in his driveway in April 1993. It was the third major assassination attempt on Hani’s life. He was the right wing’s enemy number one and was generally ...
generation. Tonight we deal with two such leaders and both were murdered before they could play the role they were destined to, Steve Biko and Chris Hani. Biko’s death at the hands of policemen came up during the special Truth Commission hearings about doctors and nurses this week, because ...
Two right wingers killed Chris Hani in 1993, Janusz Walus and Clive-Derby Lewis. They are in jail for this murder, but now they want amnesty from the Truth Commission because they say they had a political motive. Their amnesty application is scheduled to start in Benoni on Tuesday. His killers say ...
The same is not true of the killers of Chris Hani, Clive Derby-Lewis and Janusz Walus. Perhaps the most high profile and dramatic amnesty hearing was that of the killers of Chris Hani. From their cells in Pretoria Central prison the English speaking Afrikaner and the Polish immigrant came to face four weeks of gruelling cross examination.
But across the country the youth, particularly the black youth, rampaged through cities giving vent to their anger. // Nine days after Chris Hani’s slain a mass funeral is held in a Johannesburg stadium. Thousands come to pay their last respects. Millions more watch the funeral live on ...
This is a matter of concern to the entire leadership of the ANC. Our people are being killed and violence is escalating. There’s been a loud outcry from our people for arms and for the setting up of self defence units. The National Executive Committee is looking into this issue.
The only way of understanding the suspension of armed operation, comrade Sisulu has gone further to explain, that it means that we are not going to take initiative, but we are going to defend ourselves if we are attacked.
We can’t accept people’s calling for war, I mean I don’t accept what the PAC is saying about the year of Great Storms, because I feel that we have achieved something in this country where those oppressors in the past are actually talking to us and are showing readiness to negotiate for ...
In some parts of South Africa our movements are just as good as banned and in this part of South Africa there’s autocratic rule, there’s tyranny and Ciskei probably is an example of the worst tyranny in our country.
