Night vigils and funerals of youth activists were often targeted by taxi drivers during the state of emergency because the youth hijacked taxis for transport to funerals or during enforced stayaways.References

KHOZA, Joseph Sirero24Was severely beaten and his jaw was broken by members of the SAP at Protea police station, Soweto, Johannesburg, on 16 June 1976, the first day of the Soweto uprising. Mr Khoza was identified as a stone thrower and detained at the Fort Prison, Hillbrow, where he finally received medical treatment. He was released after intervention by an attorney.
