The three were lured into the ambush by an askari purporting to be an MK operative. The Security Branch then spread a rumour that they had been killed by the ANC on suspicion of being police informers. The operation was conducted by Vlakplaas and Section D of Security Branch headquarters. The taxi industry was a key area of conflict in the early 1990s.
