IFP-supporting hostel-dwellers were retaliating against the expulsion of IFP supporters from the area by ANC-supporting squatters. About one hundred and fifteen shacks were set alight, twenty seven people were killed and twenty five vehicles were destroyed. Twelve people were charged with crimes ranging from murder to arson but were acquitted due to lack of evidence. | References | MDITSHWA, Florence Nomabala | 34 | The wife of a local chief who was assaulted by members of iKongo in Bizana, Transkei, on 2 December 1960. Those associated with chiefs were targeted in the belief that they were collaborating with the government. Police arrived on the scene but provided no protection, ignoring both the attackers and the injured.
