Was arrested, tortured and detained in CR Swart Square, Durban, on 13 March 1989. He was kept in solitary confinement for three months and later charged under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, convicted, and imprisoned for seven years. He spent three months in Westville prison before being transferred to Robben Island.
