Was injured in an explosion while working as a guard at the Bosschoek military camp in Wasbank, near Glencoe, Natal, in April 1987. He had picked up an object from the ground and was carrying it when he slipped and dropped the object, which exploded. His hand was amputated at Ladysmith Hospital.
