She had her home burnt down and was abducted by UDF supporters, who attempted to rape her, at Camperdown, near Pietermaritzburg, in December 1989, during intensifying political conflict in the area. About 1000 homes were badly damaged or destroyed in political violence in Mpumalanga in 1989.
