A-Team (Chesterville, Durban)

Explanation
The Chesterville A-Team, a state-sponsored vigilante group composed of Inkatha supporters, was set up by the Security Branch in 1985 in Chesterville, Durban, to counter the activities of the UDF, COSAS and other civic organisations in the area. Political tensions between UDF supporters and members of the Chesterville A-Team frequently resulted in attacks against UDF and ANC supporters.

In tonight’s programme we bring you a report on Steven Biko the man and the testimony of those who caused his death. We also analyse the three months in the late 1980s which will haunt Winnie Madikizela-Mandela for the rest of her life. This week the world was told that it was Winnie ...
Perhaps this kind of confession, forgiveness and reconciliation are as important in our country as the truth commission process. There will be no Truth Commission hearing this coming week. The commissioners and their staff are taking a rest and having a ‘bosberaad’ at the same time to take ...
The Commission also pressed the policemen on their apparent lack of thoroughness in all investigations relating to Madikizela-Mandela. // Could you tell me why further efforts weren’t taken to perhaps try and locate more witnesses or other evidence to corroborate the information that you had ...
We’ve all heard of the dramatic stories of Dirk Coetzee and Eugene de Kock’s hit squad at Vlakplaas and the shady army unit, the CCB. And there is an impression that these formed the heart of the apartheid government’s violent strategy of torture and murder against pro-democracy activists. ...
1995. South Africa reaches out emotionally to the concept of a rainbow nation. This moment is imprinted on our psyche as a time when one nation became a possibility, but today we have to ask is the rainbow nation a mirage? Did it exist? Can it exist? And if it does, is it over?
Perhaps mister Botha’s former cabinet colleagues should take his advice seriously to cooperate with the Truth Commission. More than one of them have been implicated directly in gross human rights violations and there are only 20 days left before the deadline for applications for amnesty. After 14 ...
Our team will be in Port Elizabeth this coming week to attend the amnesty hearings of the policemen in whose custody Steve Biko died. Sunday will be our last programme for 1997, so please don’t miss it. Goodnight.
Besides the Komati river and the mineshaft versions of where Stanza’s remains are, a former kitskonstabel, Johnny Mokaleng claimed that he was buried in Phokeng. However the TRC excavation team could not find any evidence.
The courts have become an important tool for people who don’t like the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In the latest round, four policemen and former policemen have sued the former Cape MEC for safety and security, Dennis Neer, for defamation after he told the Truth Commission in Port ...
I never told Benzien or anybody else in so many words to assault any of these mentioned people or to make use of the wet-bag method during interrogation. After the first incident during which Jacobs was subjected to the method by Benzien I was however aware of his modus operandi. As set out above, ...
The legal battles between the Truth Commission and police officers will continue this coming week. From the Special Report team, goodbye until next Sunday.
Certainly the questions uppermost in the minds of Archbishop Tutu and his team this week. They”d gathered former State Security Council members Pik Botha, Adriaan Vlok, Roelf Meyer and Leon Wessels to get straight answers. Was the State Security Council a shadow cabinet? What were its precise ...
That was the end of tonight’s Special Report. Our team moves with the Truth Commission to KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday and our appointment with you is next Sunday at quarter to seven. Goodnight.
That then is the BBC’s account. The final truth remains to be determined by the Truth Commission and the Special Report team will bring details of those hearings as they unfold. Please join the Special Report again this Sunday evening at eight on SABC 1. Good night.
The Amnesty Committee sitting in Port Elizabeth was supposed to hear the amnesty applications of the murderers of Easter Cape student activist Sizwe Kondile this week, but after bureaucratic bungling by the Amnesty Committee and yet more fancy footwork by the now familiar team of lawyers it had to ...
We’ve come to the end of our programme. The Truth Commission is facing a crisis of credibility right now. The generals of the former police force seem to have a defined attitude, while the National Defence Force also appears rather reluctant to cooperate. The military submission that was supposed ...
A bit of good news as we end tonight’s programme; we saw Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Chairperson of the Truth Commission back in action this week after a long absence due to ill health. He addressed a press conference on Friday. We sincerely hope his recovery will be swift and complete. That’s it ...
Winnie Mandela, PW Botha, Magnus Malan, Clive Derby-Lewis and Janusz Walus. That’s who the Truth Commission had to deal with this past week. In today’s programme we have full reports on the amnesty applications of Chris Hani’s murderers, the testimony by former Defence Minister Magnus Malan ...
I think there is only one way to go and that is to go to the Commission. We have been treated very well by the Commission. They stand for reconciliation. They want the truth to come out and for the past to be buried. // What is it that you and your team want to tell the Amnesty Committee? // We ...
It is expected that the court will hear evidence on a weapon eventually fished out of the dam. When Barnard’s cocaine habit worsened and he stopped spending money on anything but drugs Amore Badenhorst turned on him. She ranted, shot at him, burned his sauna to keep warm. Nothing would make him ...
