He died after being shot in police custody in Umbumbulu, near Durban, on 12 June 1991. Three of Mr Chonco’s employees, all members of the Mkhize family, were also shot dead in police custody at the time, allegedly in an effort by the security forces to kill members of the prominent, ANC-supporting Bhengu and Mkhize families.
