Was detained by the SAP on 28 December 1966 and held in solitary confinement in Ladybrand, Orange Free State, for over a month. On his release in January 1967, he was banned in terms of the Suppression of Communism Act for a period of five years, during which time he was imprisoned in the Fort prison, Johannesburg, for ten days, for contravening the terms of his restriction order.
