She survived an attempt on her life when self-defence unit (SDU) members attacked her homestead in the Umgababa area, KwaZulu, near Durban, with a hand grenade on 12 April 1992. The family were believed to be IFP supporters. The grenade bounced back and injured the two attackers. One SDU member was granted amnesty (AC/2000/061).
