He suffered injuries when a landmine exploded as he drove over it in Messina, Transvaal, on 12 December 1986. The attack was part of an ANC landmine campaign aimed at military patrols in the rural border regions. Three MK operatives were granted amnesty for the incident (AC/2001/093).
