Was shot and severely injured while travelling in a taxi when gunmen opened fire on it from another taxi near Springs, Transvaal, on 21 September 1992, during ongoing political conflict in the area. Six people died and two were injured in the incident. Mr Hlatswayo suffered permanent damage to his leg as a result of the shooting.
