Was severely beaten and tortured by members of the Special Branch in Warmbad, Transvaal, on 12 September 1989. Mr Kutu was the Bela-Bela branch chairperson of the Post and Telecommunications Workers Association at a time of rent boycotts, strikes and stayaways.
