LIWANE, Mzwandile ‘Mechanic’

Description A member of the Lagunya Taxi Association who was shot dead in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on 11 July 1993, by a hit squad wearing balaclavas. Mr Liwane was a witness and plaintiff in cases laid against WEBTA, an opposing taxi organisation. The attack took place during heightened taxi conflict that acquired a political dimension due to perceptions of political allegiances. See taxi violence.
