He survived an attempt on his life by SADF members at his home in Nelspruit, Transvaal, on an unspecified date between 1987 and 1989. Mr Mankahlane, whom they believed to be an ANC supporter, managed to escape. One perpetrator was granted amnesty (AC/2001/277).
