He suffered severe injuries at his home in Diepkloof, Soweto, Johannesburg, when assaulted by a crowd of residents, ANC and ANCYL members. The attack had been directed against his father who was accused of giving information to the police. His father and brother were killed and set alight and two other family members were assaulted. Six ANCYL members were granted amnesty (AC/2001/127).
