He suffered severe emotional trauma as a result of an arson attack on Khanya House, the headquarters of the Southern African Catholic Bishops` Conference, in Pretoria on 12 October 1988. The victims were trapped in the burning building for some time before being rescued. Twelve Vlakplaas operatives and seven other Security Branch Headquarters operatives, including senior personnel, were granted amnesty (AC/2000/215).
