He had his home burnt down by ANCYL supporters in the Uganda informal settlement at Umlazi, Durban, in January 1987 in intensifying political conflict in the area. His father, aged 70, was stoned and stabbed to death in the incident, allegedly because he was thought to be an Inkatha supporter.
