Was beaten to death by hostel-dwellers and members of the SAP outside his home in Mzimhlophe, Soweto, Johannesburg, on 29 August 1976 in the aftermath of the Soweto uprising. The State used hostel-dwellers to intimidate and attack Soweto residents who had called for a stayaway in the wake of the uprising and subsequent police action.
