Was shot dead by IFP supporters at Estcourt, Natal, on 2 April 1994 in political conflict between IFP and ANC supporters during the run-up to the April 1994 elections. Ms Mthembu had fled her house when it was petrol-bombed, but the perpetrators pursued her and her son into a church where they had sought refuge, and killed them both.
