He was detained at Middledrift prison, Ciskei, on 7 September 1986. During his detention, he was severely beaten and tortured by members of the Ciskei Police, allegedly because he encouraged people to join a consumer boycott. Mr Mzaza has suffered from epilepsy ever since.
