Was injured in a shooting by members of the SAP in Sharpeville, Vereeniging, Transvaal, during the Sharpeville massacre on 21 March 1960. Police opened fire on a crowd of unarmed people holding a peaceful protest against the Pass Laws, killing 69 people and injuring several others. Mr Ngati was reportedly then detained for a month.
