She died after being shot by named perpetrators who attacked a night vigil in Alexandra, Johannesburg, on 2 March 1991. Five people died in the attack, and 14 others were injured. Alexandra was tense due to clashes between IFP-supporting hostel-dwellers and ANC-supporting residents.
