A member of the Port Elizabeth Civic Association who was detained under section 29 in Port Elizabeth, on 28 October 1987, allegedly for being in possession of firearms and his involvement in the death of a number of people. Mr Sokutu was kept in solitary confinement and severely assaulted and tort u red during his detention by named members of the SAP, resulting in a damaged eye, a broken collarbone and fractured ribs. He was eventually sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment.
