A founding member of COSAS who was detained, assaulted and tortured by suffocation in Johannesburg in 1976. Ms Tyawa was detained at various times by the Security Police at John Vorster Square and Protea police station because of her political involvement. Ms Tyawa was held in solitary confinement for nineteen months.
