He died when he was shot by APLA operatives in Korsten, Port Elizabeth, on 4 October 1991. Mr Van Niekerk was delivering the payroll to a company when he was robbed of the money and killed. One APLA member was granted amnesty (AC/2000/114). See APLA attacks.
