Was severely beaten, allegedly by SADF members, at his home in Phola Park, Tokoza, Transvaal, on 13 March 1992. His mother and brother were also assaulted during the attack and his infant twin siblings were slightly injured when soldiers broke their bedroom window with rifle butts. During April 1992 the SADF 32 Battalion which was deployed in Phola Park as a peacekeeping force was involved in a series of incidents of misconduct including murder, rape and assault, leading Justice Goldstone to recommend that the unit be removed from South African townships.
