An MK cadre who was executed on 9 September 1986 in a Pretoria prison, after being sentenced to death for the murder of five civilians in the Amanzimtoti shopping centre bomb blast in December 1985. Mr Zondo claimed he had tried to warn the shopping centre about the impending blast. Mr Zondo’s alleged accomplice turned state witness. Two other ANC activists were hanged the same day. Members of the Security Branch later applied foramnesty for the murder of two other suspected accomplices in the bomb attack.

Mbeki also spoke about the Amanzimtoti supermarket bomb in 1985 where five people were killed and more than 40 injured. MK cadre Andrew Zondo planted the bomb after hearing about a South African attack on Lesotho in which more than forty people died. Zondo was later hanged for this deed.
