Special Report
Transcripts for Section 2 of Episode 11

TimeSummary
01:14In 1990, a group of young ultra-right wingers started a long term plan to ensure continued white rule in South Africa. The political leader of the group was Jean du Plessis. His father, Arman du Plessis was a member of the Boere Bervrydings Beweging. He had a strong influence on his son and his high school friend, Jean van Wyk.Full Transcript and References
01:35My father believed the white race was superior. He believed that all other races were mud races, sub-races that did not have a right to exist. // Du Plessis and Van Wyk attended services of the ”Church of the Creator.” Their bible was called ‘the white man’s bible’. // I believed that nature set an example that we had to follow. The laws of nature were the supreme laws and the white male the highest on the evolution ladder. // During military training Jean du Plessis met a reconnaissance soldier, Jurgens White who was to become the military leader of the ‘Nasionaal Sosialistiese Partisane.’ The fourth member was Jurgen Grobbelaar. His mother believes he had been indoctrinated. // I want to appeal to all parents: petition government to declare indoctrination a crime.Full Transcript
03:06At the University of Pretoria Du Plessis, Grobbelaar and Van Wyk joined the right wing ‘Afrikaner Studentefront.’ // We decided that Mr. Nelson Mandela’s meeting on campus would not go ahead. We decided to disrupt the meeting with violence.Full Transcript
03:32One of the aims of the NSP was to unify the diverse right wing groupings in the country. Du Plessis discussed these ideas with different right wing groups and individuals, both inside and outside South Africa. NSP members launched their first operation after taking a blood oath, swearing that they would give their lives for their objectives. The organisation needed money and arms.Full Transcript
03:54In October 1991 they decided to break into a house at Louis Trichardt. Jurgens White knew the Roux family and their home well and he knew where to look for weapons. // Mrs. Dubani at that stage was outside, busy sweeping, standing right in front of us. Virtually looking straight into White’s face without actually noticing him because we were camouflaged. But I think she became suspicious at some point. And that’s when White told her in her own language, he greeted her. He said ‘hello’ and she turned around and he then shot her from behind. He then proceeded to cut her throat. At that stage I thought we should withdraw, because the operation was not going according to plan. It was the plan that we would withdraw under those circumstances, but at that stage Mr. Dubani came around the corner, saw Mrs. Dubani lying on the ground and fled down the path. White shot at him, he missed him, and told me to shoot. I then followed Mr. Dubani down the road and fired a shot at him. White ...moreFull Transcript
06:02After the death of the three people in Louis Trichardt we decided that we were past the point of return. People had died. The police could be looking for us. We could not turn back. // During operations the next few days NSP members obtained weapons and ammunition. Jurgen Grobbelaar’s parents became worried when he didn’t contact them. They reported him missing and were told by the security police that they were also looking for him. Full Transcript
06:33On the 28th of October this Lieutenant from the security police visited me again. He alleged that the security police had a file on Jurgens. And his words to me were, if we find him, we’ll shoot him, we’ll kill him. // On the 8th of November Hester Grobbelaar heard a radio news report of two people who had been shot at Nuni put. They were Jurgens White and her son. The police told her that the two had committed suicide. They also said that a large number of weapons and ammunition were found in their car. Full Transcript
07:13I have a lot of difficulty with the scenario sketched by the police of what had happened there. And I must state unequivocally that we don’t believe it. The magistrate also found that it was impossible that these shots could have been inflicted by themselves. I would like to know who was responsible for this. Who can be so sick to blast away a dead person’s face? The security police were aware of my child’s whereabouts during the time that we were looking for him. Because after his death, a couple of hours afterwards they arrested two so-called friends in that same block of flats. Full Transcript
08:06Du Plessis is serving a twelve year prison sentence and Van Wyk life imprisonment. This week they appeared before the Amnesty Committee. Both men believe they have been rehabilitated. Du Plessis had converted to Christianity and started a regular church service in jail. // Not only the three people who had died at Louis Trichardt, but also White and Grobbelaar. This really upset me, and I feel responsible for their deaths, in the sense that I was the leader of the organisation. I introduced Grobbelaar to the organisation. // I would like to say to Mr. and Mrs. Dubani’s family and friends. I’d like to say to them I’m really sorry for what happened and would like to say to Mrs. Roux’s family and friends, I’m truly sorry for the error which we committed there. I’m really, really sorry. I have no words to express how I feel and nothing can undo, no words can undo what we actually did but I am very sorry. Full Transcript
09:19I lost a wife. We had been married for nearly 26 years. We had known each other for 32 years. She was my high school girlfriend since Standard 8 in 1960. This is a long time. To lose all that and then a man tells you that he is sorry. // That sorry cannot never make up for what we have lost. // I think the whole mission started as a game. He said some ridiculous things today. It sounded like a toy soldier story.Full Transcript
09:54I think if I look back at it now, I would see it as being naïve to think that one could really change the country and the future of people in South Africa. // I was terribly afraid of the unknown of what would happen in South Africa. At that stage I feared an ANC takeover and now I know it was just propaganda, it was a myth. So, I’ve been relieved of that fear. // That same fear is evident in a poem by Jurgen Grobbelaar to his mother. // Full Transcript
