Transcripts for Section 4 of Episode 40

TimeSummary
15:14Let’s turn our attention now to the Amnesty hearings in East London this past week. Young people play a large role in the transformation of our country. In the 1970s the young lions took to the streets to fight Bantu education. In the 1980s we heard the cry, ‘no education before liberation.’ It was a traumatic and confusing time for young people and many young lions ended up doing things that went outside the boundaries of a legitimate liberation struggle. ANC Youth League members this week applied for amnesty for murder which they claim was committed for political reasons. Full Transcript and References
15:55Apartheid is a monster, it’s a Frankenstein. // This, whatever they’re doing now will have horrible repercussions in the future for our children. Full Transcript
16:18In the run-up to the 1994 elections Oupa Gqozo formed the African Democratic Movement. The party’s aim was to entrench Gqozo’s dictatorial control of the Ciskei in the face of a changing political dispensation. The ANC youth opposed the ADM and all that it stood for. The clashes were violent and resulted in many deaths.Full Transcript
16:43We were the youth, we are the youth. We did not have a full grasp of political movements and steps. We did this because of the elegy of youth. Full Transcript
17:03After the release of Nelson Mandela the ANC Youth League of Gobozani in the Ciskei began to supersede traditional chiefs who were seen as part of the past regime. Gqozo’s ADM supported the tribal system. // They wanted the chief and we didn’t and that’s what led to the conflict.Full Transcript
17:28On the 27th of April 1993, exactly one year before our first national democratic elections Nohombile Mphambani was killed by these seven youths. They said she was a member of the ADM, supported the tribal system and she was part of a plan to assassinate ANC leaders. // We went to her house. They saw us approaching her house toyi-toying, on the 27th. She ran away with her two children and approached the veld. And we chased after her. // As the youth I was the first one, one of the first ones to get to Mrs. Mphambani. I took stones because I saw the other members throwing stones at her I also picked up stones and started throwing them at her. // She came towards me. I took out a knife and stabbed her. // She had been bleeding. I picked up a stone, threw it at her. It got her at the back of the head, because I was throwing the stone from her back. // I picked up two stones; I hit her twice, on her head and on her chest. She never fell and I picked up another stone and hit her on her ...moreFull Transcript
19:22The decision to kill Nohombile Mphambani was taken collectively at a mass meeting the applicants told the Committee. The ADM was oppressing free political activity in their location. // We were not liberated at all. We were not granted the opportunity to show our political affiliation and even our meetings were disrupted. // And did you really believe that by killing this woman you are going to feel liberated? // It is painful and I feel remorse because I took part in taking her life. Now I do realize that we were not supposed to have done that, but because of the spirit of the day I found myself in such a situation. Full Transcript
20:20The seven are still serving prison sentences in the Mdantsane Prison in East London. They explained why they killed her and apologized to her family. // Because we did not know who ADM would kill next. We then acted in self defence against ADM. We can’t go on. The action we then took was to act against Ms Mphambani by killing her. // I feel very disturbed because as much as she was my family it was necessary for me to take part in our actions because I was already involved and it was difficult for me to turn back. // I ask for forgiveness because when we killed her our intention was not to leave them without a mother because I know that for them not having a mother anymore they will not forget that in their lifetime. But we should reconcile because at that time we were young people who wanted change quickly.Full Transcript
