Was forced to flee his home in Imbali, Pietermaritzburg, in May 1989 for fear of an attack by Inkatha supporters because his family opposed the payment of fees to Inkatha. In a recruitment drive launched by Inkatha in the Edendale and Vulindlela valleys that month, Caprivi trainees were deployed to these two areas, and at least ten people died in the consequent political violence.
